“A free and sovereign Internet - these concepts do not contradict each other, because that law is aimed only at one thing - to prevent negative consequences with the possible disconnection of the global network, the management of which is largely located abroad,” Putin said.

According to him, sovereignty lies in the fact that the country has its own resources, which can be included, and that the Internet is not cut off.

“We are not moving towards the closure of the Internet and are not going to do this,” he added.

On November 1, a law came into force in Russia on ensuring the stable operation of the Russian segment of the Internet if it was disconnected from the global network.

Earlier, Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev approved the provision on conducting exercises to ensure sustainable Internet in the country.

In late September, telecom operators began installing equipment under this law.

The law on sustainable Runet was signed by Russian President Vladimir Putin in early May.
