The cutlery clings to the plate when the potatoes are split into a sufficiently large piece. Second Class Clara Wallenskog is pleased with today's lunch, breaded fish, boiled potatoes and cold sauce.

- My favorite dish in school is cowboy soup. There is minced beef sauce and potatoes in, she says.

"Can depend on a lot"

Fredrik Kullberg, head of kitchen at Kilenskolan in Töreboda, says that the children eat well every day, but a little extra on Mondays.

- It can depend on a lot of course. What they have managed to do this weekend - if they have had lots of activities and not been able to eat. Or if they haven't done so much and haven't eaten because of it.

The children are doubtful

Clara Wallenskog and her classmates are not entirely sure that they eat the most on Mondays. Pontus Johansson says he eats most when it is good food and when he is very hungry.

- It could be if I have been out on the break and played giant-giant-huge, he says.

Research should investigate

As with the children, the perception in the research world is not clear.

- The fact that students eat more on Mondays is a view of many, but we have not yet been able to prove it, says Emma Patterson. She represents the Center for Epidemiology and Social Medicine at the Stockholm Region, but is also a researcher at the Department of Public Health at the Karolinska Institute.

Schools measure access and waste

Right now, schools in several municipalities around Sweden are measuring how much children eat for school lunch and how much is thrown away. The results are reported via the tool Skolmat Sverige. Thereafter, the results will be evaluated and analyzed.

- It is important to remember that this is difficult to interpret. It could be that students throw more food on Mondays, or that staff cook more or fresher dishes.

There is no need to worry

If it turns out that children eat more food on Mondays, there need not be cause for concern, says Emma Patterson. She thinks it is more common for children and parents to sleep longer on the weekend and therefore eat less, than children get too little food at home.

- If it were, it would apply to some children who have poorer conditions at home. I don't think you can say that in general.

SVT reported · How do you react to the phenomenon of "Monday hunger"?

My spontaneous thought was that it is no wonder that they are hungry when they have had a weekend to run around and do away with energy.

My experience is that the children always come home hungry from school. Always have something to eat with me when I pick them up when they eat so poorly in school. Plus the lunch is already 10:30, and then they will stand there until we pick up 17:30.

I have little thought. Maybe it is that many children eat alone in front of a TV / computer / tablet on the weekends or maybe just with an adult, the activity may not put the meal in the center without the entertainment at the center or they should just get something in it (If the adult don't think cooking is more a must than something fun). I think it promotes the appetite to have more people sitting down and eating together, like at school.

Think that bad school food is generally a bigger problem. The children are often hungry when they come home

Late in bed and stress the morning before week pattern is up can be cause. We drive macaroni and fried fallow sausage for breakfast. Mushrooms Thursday can be researched in. How long are you measured if you have high combustion. Or not even get the consistency on this long day after lunch. Children can eat favorite dishes more often than adults. Most important is that they get energy to meet today's challenges. You can be worried about a Monday (the day becomes nice or nasty) and breakfast does not go down ... then lunch is welcome.

There is also a class aspect and we know that many families cannot afford proper food. Child poverty still lives in 2019.

Maybe the parents' "fine food" over the weekend has not really been the children's favorite food?

Think it is because you have done a lot during the weekend but do not have time to eat properly.

For smaller children, parental roots can be behind. My child who has just started low school basically refuses to eat at home but says she eats everything in school "because that's good".

Not just schoolchildren. Even our little ones in childcare are hungry on Mondays.
