19 December 2019 "In the last year the indicators indicate an improvement in well-being". Thus Istat in the Bes report, fair and sustainable well-being, designed to go beyond the measurement of GDP. "Over 50% of the total of the approximately 110 indicators for which comparison is possible", it is explained, "shows an improvement". At the territorial level, the highest values ​​are found in the North, the lowest ones in the Center-South. Analyzing the different spheres at the base of Bes, difficulties in work, reconciliation of life times and economic satisfaction are confirmed.

Nearly 2 million young people suffering
There are almost two million young people between 18 and 34 years of age in suffering, that is, who lack two or more dimensions of well-being (from health to work, from the social sphere to the territorial one, passing through education). This is the result of the Istat report on fair and sustainable well-being (Bes). What the Institute calls the "multi-deprivation" is higher, it is emphasized, "among young adults aged 25-34 and in the South".

Trust in the institutions rises, but the vote in the parties is 2.7
In 2018, confidence in some institutions "has improved but the average vote remains under sufficiency": 4.4 for the judicial system, 3.8 for the national parliament and only 2.7 for political parties. This was revealed by Istat in the Bes Report, giving an account of the Italian report cards. "Confidence in the Police Forces (average vote 6.6) and in the Fire Department (average grade 8) remains at high levels, but stable over the past year.

Life expectancy 82.3 years in 2018, historic high
In 2018, life expectancy at birth reached an all-time high in Italy at 82.3 years (80.9 years for men and 85.2 years for women). However, Istat underlines how the greater female longevity is accompanied by more precarious health conditions: a 65-year-old woman can expect to live an average of another 22.5 years, of which 12.7 years (56.4%) with activity limitations; while for a man of the same age the life expectancy is 19.3 years, of which 9.3 years (48.9%) with limitations. Life expectancy in good health at birth in the North is 3 years higher than in the South (59.3 against 56.3 years).

Education improves but below the EU average, abandonment alert
The education and training indicators are improving but the levels reached in Italy remain lower than those of the European average. According to the Bes report, in 2018 the share of young people between 15 and 29 who do not work or study is reduced (Neet) (23.4%, -0.7 percentage points compared to 2017) while the share of people with experience is increasing of cultural participation (27.9%, +0.8 percentage points over the previous year) and continuing education (8.1%, +0.2 percentage points compared to 2017). The criticality of early school leaving remains, with significant regional and gender differences. In 2018, 14.5% of young people aged between 18 and 24 did not graduate from high school in second grade and did not attend study or training courses (13.8% in 2016).

One boy out of three insufficient in Italian
Among the children of the second year of high school the share of those who do not "reach the sufficiency (low performer) in the competences is 30.4% for Italian and 37.8% for mathematics". The Bes report notes this, with reference to the school year 2018/2019. "In the regions of the South, the share of students who do not reach a sufficient level rises - it is emphasized - to 41.9% for skills in Italian and 53.5% for those in mathematics".

In 2018 less murders and thefts, but stable feminicides
In 2018 the rate of homicides diminishes and the indicators that measure predatory crimes, or thefts in houses, muggings and pickpockets, improve Istat. "The need for particular attention to gender-based violence is confirmed", reports the institute of statistics. In 2018 there were 212 murders of men and 133 of women (corresponding respectively to 0.7 and 0.4 murders per 100 thousand inhabitants of the same sex). The last year confirms the tendency to decrease the rate of homicides of men (0.8 in 2017), but not that of women, which remains stable (0.4 in 2017). There are still strong gender differences in the relationship between author and murder victim: 81.2% of women killed are victims of a known person (64% in 2004). In particular, in 2018 in 54.9% of cases the women were killed by the current partner or by the previous one.

Over 2 Italians out of 5 satisfied with their lives
In 2018 over 2 Italians out of 5 are satisfied with their lives. Istat emphasizes, in 2018, subjective perceptions of well-being, with more than two out of five individuals expressing a high satisfaction rating for their lives (+1.8 percentage points compared to 2017). The share of optimistic individuals also increased (+1.8 percentage points) and that of a pessimistic attitude decreased (-2 percentage points). In the South there are lower levels of satisfaction with life (-11.9 percentage points compared to the North), satisfaction with leisure (-7.5 percentage points compared to the North) and the share of the population is also lower which expresses a positive opinion on future prospects (-5.5 percentage points compared to the North).
