French President Emmanuel Macron "will not abandon the project" of pension reforms. Ludovic MARIN / AFP

On the 14th day of a strike that threatens to spill over into the Christmas holidays, Emmanuel Macron said he was ready to " improve " the pension reform project, at the center of new discussions this Wednesday, December 18 between the social partners and the Prime Minister.

Admittedly, the Élysée Palace “ will not abandon the contested project ” of pension reform. But the presidency also recognizes that " to bring the reformist unions back to the table, a compromise must be found ". And what the CFDT wants is notably the abolition of the pivotal age at 64 which was its red line. With the current system, employees retiring before this age would suffer a discount, those who leave later receive a “ bonus ” on the contrary.

However, the objective set by the President of the Republic is clear: try by all means to get a break from the social movement during the holidays. If the reformist unions propose something that does not call into question the fundamentals of the project, it will be a step forward.
