A fishing village was targeted near Baga Sola in the western province of Lac on the night of Tuesday to Wednesday. The death toll is at least 14 dead and several injured.

At least 14 people were killed Tuesday in western Chad, by suspected members of the jihadist group Boko Haram, who attacked a fishing village on the shore of Lake Chad, the regional prefect announced on Wednesday concerned.

This vast expanse of water and swamps is riddled with islets serving as haunts and training camps for Boko Haram, which multiplies deadly attacks and kidnappings in the four bordering countries: Chad, Niger, Nigeria and Cameroon.

" These are elements of Boko Haram who are present in this area, " said the spokesman for the Chadian army, Colonel Azem Bermandoa, who confirmed the attack but gave no results.

" Yesterday [Tuesday] , people came to attack fishermen not far from the village of Kaiga, there were 14 dead, 5 injured and 13 missing, of whom it is not known if they were kidnapped by the attackers ", said Imouya Souabebe, the prefect of the department of Kaya, where Kaiga is located.

Kaiga is located around 60 km from the Nigerian border. " We know that it is always the elements of Boko Haram who scour this area, so they are at the origin of this attack, " added the prefect. " The attackers came in small groups first before being reinforced to attack the fishermen in an area called the red zone, which is difficult to access, " he said. Fishermen were attacked on Wednesday in a red zone where fishing is prohibited, "confirmed to the AFP the governor of the Lake Region, Noki Charfadine, who speaks of at least nine dead.
