Meråker municipality, which borders Åre municipality, wants to draw a new snowmobile trail to the Swedish border. But the County Administrative Board of Jämtland County does not think that the idea is so good because on the Swedish side there is a snowmobile ban.

In its opinion, the county administrative board writes:

In recent years, the County Administrative Board has received several requests to build snowmobile routes to the national border from the Norwegian side. Snowmobiling prohibited outside snowmobile trails on the Swedish side along virtually the entire border in Jämtland County. The prohibitions are aimed at protecting the natural environment, reindeer husbandry and the open-air public life. Today, there seems to be a lack of understanding of Swedish off-road driving legislation with many Norwegian stakeholders. Given that Norwegian law is much stricter when it comes to limiting off-road driving, the understanding should be great.

The municipal politicians in Meråker plan to make decisions about the snowmobile routes by January 2020 at the earliest.
