Swedish authorities and the Association of Adoption Center, which mediated adoptions from Chile, have not admitted that any irregularities were committed during the 1970s and 1980s. But now SVT News has taken note of previously unknown documentation from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs archive, which reveals that representatives of the state and the association did not know how children came to be adopted for adoption and that there were concerns and many question marks from the Swedish side.

"We just thanked and received"

In a letter sent in the 1970s from an employee at the Adoption Center to the embassy, suspicions of irregularities regarding a representative in Chile are expressed: "... but this is also related to the fact that we never really got to know HOW she worked and during what forms she received for the children. We have only, to put it drastically, thanked and received ”.

Right now, an extensive criminal investigation is underway in Chile on suspected illegal adoptions of children who ended up in Sweden to a large extent, but already in the 1970s there were suspicions that everything was not right.
