On Monday, lawyer André Seebregts requested that the court in Utrecht revoke his appointment as counsel for Gökmen T. According to Seebregts, the man who committed an attack on a tram in Utrecht on 18 March is sufficiently capable of looking after his own interests.

The 38-year-old T. was assigned a lawyer in November because the court concluded on the basis of the Pieter Baan Center report that there was a "defective development of mental capacities".

The court then said it had the right to appoint a lawyer against the will of T.. T. announced earlier at the first session in July that he was not a democrat and that he did not recognize the court. That's why he didn't want a lawyer.

Seebregts (shown in the photo), made it clear Monday that there is no intellectual disability at T. and that he is well able to follow the trial against his person. He knows what his rights are and that he is hanging over him for life.

The prosecutors agreed with the words of Seebregts. They also request that the court's decision be revoked.

Man did not appear on session

T. was obliged to appear on Monday, but he fought so fiercely that according to the court "such violence" was needed to transport the man to Utrecht that this was abandoned.

The Public Prosecution Service (OM) added that the use of this violence could ensure that there would not be a normal conversation with T.

It was not decided to oblige the man to come and that led to indignant reactions from relatives.

lawyer Sébas Diekstra, who assists the father of the shot nineteen-year-old Roos, declares that the father "is baffled about the fact that the order to bring him back is no longer enforced. He gets the idea that the suspect is in charge of the criminal proceedings".

Man says to have acted by faith

The 38-year-old T. has announced that he opened fire in March of this year in a tram on 24 Octoberplein in Utrecht. He also shot at cars and bystanders outside the vehicle.

The man claims to have acted on the basis of his belief in Allah and the fact that Westerners kill Muslims.

A total of four people died as a result of the firearm violence. The wife of nineteen and two men aged 28 and 49 died on the spot. A 74-year-old man from De Meern died ten days later from his injuries.

The Public Prosecution Service said on Monday that it would definitively assume that it was a terrorist act and charged T. four-fold murder with a terrorist objective, as well as attempts to do so and threats with a terrorist objective.

The substantive treatment of the court case will take place on 2, 3, 5 and 6 March.
