Ethiopian authorities have announced the arrest of Muktar Sheikh Mohamed Subane. This colonel was wanted for alleged crimes committed in the Ogaden, the Somali-majority region of the country.

Authorities in Ogaden, Ethiopia, describe Muktar Sheikh Mohamed Subane as an important official, alleged perpetrator of executions, abductions, ethnic and religious violence.

The former colonel is said to be a former rebel of the Ogaden National Liberation Front (ONLF). He then joined the infamous Liyu police , where he rose through the ranks, until he became his intelligence officer. The officer allegedly fled during the fall of Abdi Iley's regime in August 2018. He was finally arrested in Somaliland.

Photos being circulated purportedly show ex-spy chief Colonel Mukhtar Sheikh Mohamed Subane in handcuffs in an undisclosed location after his capture, reportedly in Somaliland. Subane is wanted for alleged human rights abuses in the Somali region, Ethiopia under previous admin.

Involvement of the federal army

According to Laetitia Bader, a researcher for Human Rights Watch, " her name appeared in our research. But a credible investigation is needed to determine his possible involvement in these crimes . "

The organization denounced the numerous abuses committed by the former government of the Ogaden region. The trial of former President Abdi Iley is underway. Other senior officials have been captured, such as Hassen Dheere, head of the prison system, arrested in Puntland in May.

" For the moment, this is only a small part of the alleged criminals ," explains Laetitia Bader, who adds that " if we want real justice in this region, we will also have to involve the federal army ", accused several times serious abuses.
