The penalty for buying a car emitting more than 184 grams of CO2 per kilometer will reach 20,000 euros next year, said Bercy on Monday, confirming information from Les Echos.

This proposal is contained in an amendment to the draft budget 2020, whose examination ends Thursday in the National Assembly.

The economic daily specifies that the text contains a new scale for the penalties that will hit next year more polluting vehicles, limited so far to 12,500 euros.

The Minister of the Economy Bruno Le Maire had declared last month wanting to cap the automobile penalty, noting that beyond 173 grams of CO2 emitted per kilometer, it did not progress any more.

This uncapping must bring in 50 million euros which will finance two funds for subcontractors in the automotive sector.

Mr. Le Maire had also proposed that the advertisements for the automobile indicate "that such a vehicle has a negative impact on the environment", referring to the fields of tobacco and alcohol.

Finally, the French minister pleads for a questioning of the European rule which links CO2 emissions to the weight of vehicles.
