According to the latest figures from 2017 from Statistics Sweden, 147,000 children live in a vulnerable financial situation. This means that they do not have enough money to cover basic needs, such as food, housing, electricity, insurance and more. During Christmas, it becomes clear to many parents that the economy is not collapsing.

- For example, you wait to buy prince sausage for after Christmas and buy regular barbecue sausage instead, so the child can eat their prince sausage after Christmas because then they sell it out, says the parent Maria.

Even Johanna, who is single with two children in preschool age, testifies to how tough it can be to not be able to give their children what they need.

- You feel extremely bad as a parent. You feel that you are betraying your children, says Johanna.

550 families collect Christmas presents and Christmas food

Next week, 550 families will head to Stockholm's city mission, Young Station Söder, to pick up a Christmas present and Christmas food.

- You know the expectations you feel for Christmas and if you, as a parent, feel that you cannot afford to buy food or Christmas presents for your children, it can be stressful, explains Erica Sandin, Head of Unit at Young Station Söder.

And the need is not just now.

- We are paying attention now, and that is fine, but the need exists all the time, Sandin concludes.
