Information on François Bozizé's return to the Central African Republic was confirmed to RFI on Monday, December 16, in particular by the son of the former president. The former head of state has been in exile abroad since his fall in 2013.

Several sources actually confirm the return of François Bozizé to the Central African capital. The former head of state had been in exile in Uganda since his fall in 2013. He was then overthrown by the Seleka rebellion. His son Jean-Francis Bozizé therefore confirms this return, without giving more details for the moment. He claims that his relatives are in the process of informing the Central African authorities.

What modalities?

According to Jeune Afrique , the former head of state was greeted by members of his party, the Kwa Na Kwa (KNK). No information yet, however, on the terms of this return and in particular the means used. Indeed, theoretical, François Bozizé is still under United Nations sanctions, and airlines are prohibited from transporting it by plane to the Central African Republic. An administrative procedure is precisely underway to examine the lifting of this ban.

What about eligibility?

As early as July, his party had announced his next return. Return which was to take place before the end of 2019, a sine qua non condition for standing for the presidential election scheduled for December 27, 2019. A return which does not however guarantee the eligibility of François Bozizé.
