As a child, I never understood what resentment my father had against floor-to-ceiling windows. Why he cursed sentences with "affig", "yuppies" and "presentation plates" when we took evening walks in our most southeastern corner of the Ruhr area through new development areas in the nineties and he remembered the meadows and fields that had been there were where now independent houses displayed their inhabitants.
