December 15, 2019It was concluded with a minimum agreement, on the second day of extension of the works that should have been concluded on Friday, the UN climate conference in Madrid, the COP25. The approximately 200 signatory countries of the Paris agreement failed to avoid the failure of the summit: after two weeks of difficult negotiations and two more nights of intense negotiations, in the closing session they reported the "urgent need" to act against global warming , but without reaching an agreement on some essential points to respond to the climate emergency and the urgent appeals of ecologist militants. In particular, the lack of agreement on the rules of the international carbon markets weighs heavily, the latest dossier of the user manual of the 2015 Paris agreement.

Not even the prolongation of the negotiations resolved the issue of Article 6 of the Paris agreement on the CO2 markets. The summit ended with a bearish statement and a generic appeal to countries to make "more ambitious efforts". We should talk about it again in Bonn in June 2020.

"It looks like Cop25 is about to fall apart. Science is clear but science is ignored," Greta Thunberg, the Swedish activist against climate change, had tweeted in the night, warning of the risk of failure. "Whatever happens, we will not abandon. We are only at the beginning," the young woman had added.
