• Catalonia: An elderly woman, the first fatal victim of an outrage with an electric scooter in Spain

An 82-year-old woman died on November 25 after being hit three days before by an electric scooter, sources from the Barcelona City Council have confirmed.

The woman is the first fatality victim for this cause in the city of Barcelona, although the Urban Guard still investigates whether the old woman's death is directly related to the outrage suffered.

The newspaper El Periodico , which advanced the information, argues that the woman, Josefa Montoya , 82, suffered the outrage at the intersection of Joaquim Costa and Carme streets, in the Raval neighborhood of Barcelona, where she lived.

The vehicle hit frontally with her, who fell backwards. She remained on the floor in a supine position, conscious but confused, until an ambulance arrived, and from there she was transferred to the Mar hospital, where she entered into a coma, explains this newspaper, which has spoken with the deceased's sister, María Montoya.

After being operated on urgently, she died three days later, on November 25. On the other hand, sources of the City Council of Barcelona have assured that they have proof of an accident caused by the hit of a scooter to a pedestrian on November 22 in the morning on Carme Street.

However, these sources clarify that the health personnel who came to that place assisted her by an anxiety attack and did not consider that she had serious injuries , and they have added that they have then had proof that the woman ended up dying on November 25.

Therefore, the unit of investigation and prevention of the accident of the Urban Guard will investigate with the hospital that attended to it if the death could be consequence of the outrage.

"We only know that the scooter was from a company, that it was rented. We are waiting for them to give us the death certificate and the part of the accident to file a complaint. But we don't know anything else, not even who was to blame: if she or who was on the scooter, "explains the victim's sister.

According to the annual road safety report of the Barcelona Public Prosecutor's Office, the Urban Guard denounced in 2018 a total of 1,868 users of electric scooters for violation of the municipal ordinance. Most of these files, specifically 806, have been initiated to generate a risk for circulation.

The first death in Spain by an electric scooter occurred in August 2018 in Esplugues de Llobregat (Barcelona), when a man ran over a 90-year-old woman.
