December 14, 2019The work grows but part-time work increases: between 2008 and 2018 - according to an analysis of the latest Istat data - part-time employees increased by one million units, from 3.3 to 4.3 million while the total number of workers has slightly exceeded pre-crisis levels.

In practice, if in 2008 the part-time employees were 3.3 out of 23.1 million (14.3%) in 2018 they became 4.3 million, equal to 18.5% of the total. The involuntary part time with 64.1% of part-time people who would like to work full-time is growing consistently.

In the third quarter of 2019 the percentage of part-time workers on the total number of workers increased again, reaching 18.77% of the 23.48 million workers. The percentage of involuntary part-time jobs in the third quarter of this year dropped slightly to 64% after reaching 64.8% in the second quarter. In 2008, before the economic crisis, the percentage of part-time workers who claimed to be in that condition unintentionally was 40.2%.

The condition of part-time work "obliged" concerns above all the dependent work and the regions of Southern Italy. In the South, the involuntary part-time rate rose from 60.7% of the part-time employees in 2008 to 79.6% in 2018, with four of those working part-time in five who would like to work full-time. In the North it went from 30% in 2008 to 55.5% in 2018.

In the third quarter of 2019, part-time employees rose again to almost 3.7 million, or 20.3% of the 18.18 million total employees. On average, 2018 part-time employees were 19.94% of employees, while in 2008 average part-time employees were only 14.79%.
