Fallen by the army after a large protest movement, former Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir was sentenced, on Saturday December 14, by a court in Khartoum, to two years in "house arrest" for corruption.

Aged 75, removed from office on April 11 after 30 years in power, he had been tried by a "special court" since August for funds collected from Saudi Arabia.

International justice is also interested in the former Sudanese president. The prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC), Fatou Bensouda, had pleaded last June, before the UN Security Council, for a translation of Omar el-Béchir before the ICC. The former leader has long been targeted by an arrest warrant for genocide in Darfur.

The military in power had then indicated that they did not intend to transfer him to the ICC, where he is accused of genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes for the conflict in Darfur, which killed nearly 300,000 people according to UN.
