Located in the north-west of Paris, the business district of La Défense is frequented every day by ranks of white-collar workers, known for the jungle of Manhattan-style skyscrapers and for the 'great arche' built by former president Francois Mitterrand on same perspective as the triumphal arch.

Together with the City of London it is among the main business districts of Europe and in the past it has already been targeted by foiled terrorist projects.
