The Italian-American actor was 86 years old. The son of an Italian-American worker and a dressmaker from Naples, he became famous in 1976 with Il prestanome, directed by Martin Ritt. Among his most famous interpretations is that of the Italian-American pizza maker in Spike Lee's film, "Do 'the right thing", for which he was nominated for an Oscar in 1990 for Best Supporting Actor.
