In Sweden, about 188,500 teachers and preschool teachers need to be examined from teacher education until 2033. However, the forecast of the proportion of beginners and students who take the degree shows that there will be no 45,000 competent teachers and preschoolers in 15 years - of these 4500 in Västerbotten.

Åsa Fahlén, chair of the Teachers' Federation, believes that the situation is serious.

- Forecasts indicate a continued serious situation and major recruitment challenges. Measures are needed to increase the attractiveness of the profession, she says in a press release.

Equal conditions are required

Åsa Fahlén believes that equal conditions are the Swedish school's biggest challenges and that it is needed for teachers throughout the country.

- This is illustrated not least by the fact that the lack of legitimate teachers is greatest where they are needed most. That is, in schools with students with socioeconomically weak backgrounds and students in small sparsely populated communities.

According to her, the state is the only player who can solve a lack of equality.

- When the municipalities now make cuts in the school area, it seems even more important.

The government is investing

According to the Swedish National Agency for Education, Peter Fredriksson, the Government has initiated a number of initiatives.

- Teacher assistants, more paths into the teaching profession and an inquiry about teacher education. Many municipalities, like the Swedish National Agency for Education, also have teacher provision as a priority area, he says in a press release.
