Early in the morning of November 18, Gülay Karagöz's assassin was attacked on an open street in Vasastan, Stockholm. The attacker had a machete and the victim was taken to hospital with cutting injuries.

His injuries were not life-threatening, but the assault is classified as attempted murder.

After a period of police work, the suspects were directed to a close relative of Gülay Karagöz and he was arrested a few days ago - on probable grounds for attempted murder for the deed in Vasastan.

The man is in his 20s and detained in his absence.

May have moved abroad

- He is wanted internationally and it is not unlikely that he will be moving abroad, says Lotta Finnsson, investigative director at the Stockholm Police.

Is the machete attack about revenge for the murder 13 years ago?

- We do not want to go into any motives, only the perpetrator knows. But it has not been an aspiration for anyone - there is an underlying story, says Lotta Finnsson.

The victim should not have recognized the person who gave up on him.

How is he doing now?

- He is operated and on the road to improvement, says Lotta Finnsson.

Was a police officer when he murdered

Gülay Karagöz was reported missing in 2005 and only eight months later she was found murdered and wound up in a press release. The then 36-year-old police student was sentenced for his refusal to life imprisonment.

He applied for a scheduled punishment in 2017 and was granted it. The sentence was set at 21 years and he is a free man since a year back, though with exclusionary measures from the Prison Service.

In connection with the investigation that was then carried out by the Forensic Medicines Agency, he acknowledged the murder of Gülay Karagöz. He must have owed her a larger sum of money.
