The Emir of the State of Qatar Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani and Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad signed today, Thursday in the Qatari capital, Doha, a memorandum of understanding to establish a joint high committee between the two countries.

The two parties discussed - during a discussion session at the beginning of Mahathir Mohamad's official visit to the State of Qatar - bilateral cooperation relations between the two countries and ways to enhance them in the future, as the talks dealt with the most prominent regional and international developments, according to the Qatar News Agency Qena.

During the talks that took place today, the two countries agreed to strengthen relations in the governmental and private sectors.

It is noteworthy that the Malaysian Prime Minister's four-day visit comes a few days before the convening of an Islamic summit in the Malaysian capital Kuala Lumpur, which was invited by Mahathir Mohamad to Turkey, Qatar, Pakistan and Indonesia to discuss issues of the Islamic world.

The Emir of the State of Qatar has said in a tweet on Twitter, that he is happy with the visit of the Prime Minister of Malaysia to Qatar, which will take cooperation and brotherhood relations between the two countries to a new stage thanks to the development experience and the great potential of the two countries.

In a meeting with representatives of the Qatar Chamber of Commerce and Industry and Qatari investors, Mahathir said that he agreed with the Qatari side to enhance joint trade between the two countries and increase cooperation in several fields, such as banking, finance, transportation, energy, as well as sports, tourism and agriculture.

He added that Malaysia welcomes more Qatari companies to invest in Malaysia and take advantage of investment opportunities, especially in the oil, gas, chemical, food and halal food industries, as well as in the hotel, tourism, Islamic banking and finance sectors.

In the context, the Malaysian Prime Minister stated that his country could become a center for providing the countries of the region (Southeast Asia) with their needs of Qatari gas.

On the other hand, Mahathir said that his country was not affected much by the trade dispute between China and the United States, noting that the economic growth rate reached 4.6%.
