The Federation Council on Wednesday, December 11, began a plenary meeting with a moment of silence in memory of the former Moscow mayor, Yuri Luzhkov.

“On December 10, in the year 84, Yuri Mikhailovich Luzhkov passed away. An outstanding statesman, the mayor of Moscow, who headed it in the most difficult period, did a lot for the development of the capital and Muscovites. We express our deepest condolences to the family and friends. I ask to honor his memory with a minute of silence, ”TASS quoted the chairman of the Federation Council, Valentina Matvienko.

She also recalled that Luzhkov from January 1996 to December 2001 was a member of the upper house of parliament from Moscow.

It is noted that the meeting of the Moscow City Council on December 11 also began with a moment of silence.

Earlier it was reported that in Moscow, people lay flowers at the memorial to Luzhkov at the metropolitan city hall in Voznesensky Lane.

The funeral of the ex-mayor of the capital will be held at the Novodevichy cemetery on Thursday, December 12, after the funeral in the Cathedral of Christ the Savior.

Luzhkov died on December 10 at the age of 83.
