Between January and June of this year in Spain only 170,074 children were born, which is the lowest figure registered since 1941, the first year of which there are data. This figure represents a 6.2% drop compared to the same period of the previous year, thus following the downward trend of recent years, only interrupted in 2014.

In addition, according to the National Institute of Statistics (INE), in the first half of this year 215,478 people have died, resulting in a negative vegetative balance (difference between births and deaths) of 45,404 people, a figure that consolidates the fall initiated in 2015

In percentage terms, according to statistics from the Natural Population Movement (NPM), between January and June, births have decreased by 6.2% compared to the same period of 2018 and, although deaths have also decreased, in 5.4% in this case, more people have died than were born.

The number of births only increased in La Rioja (5.9%) and the greatest declines occurred in the autonomous cities of Melilla (-27.6%) and Ceuta (-22.6%) and in Principality of Asturias (- 12.0%). The number of deaths decreased in all regions, although the greatest decreases occurred in Andalusia (-9.2%), the autonomous city of Melilla (-8.3%) and the Canary Islands (-8.1%).

In addition, the number of marriages decreased 1.2% compared to the same period of 2018.
