by Tiziana Di Giovannandrea 11 December 2019 ArcelorMittal opened the extraordinary layoff procedure for 3500 workers due to the shutdown of the Altoforno 2. The proceeding concerns the Taranto plant.

The industrial giant in the steel sector has informed the unions that, following the foreseeable halt, due to the probable new seizure, of the Altoforno 2, the redundancy fund in the factory will increase.

The opening of the Cigs procedure by the company depended on the provision issued yesterday by the Tarantine criminal judiciary which rejected Ilva's request for extension in Extraordinary Administration for the use of Altoforno 2 (by ArcelorMittal ). This despite the fact that the Public Prosecutor's Office had expressed a favorable opinion the day before to extend the terms to allow the plant to be brought into compliance with safety regulations.

The deadline for the necessary decontamination of the Altoforno 2, at this point, remaining fixed to December 13th, means that the plant risks a new seizure. Although it is likely that the Ilva in Extraordinary Administration will appeal the judicial decision before the Review Court.

Meanwhile, however, AncelorMittal puts his hands forward and announces Cigs. The company notice contains two new features: it will no longer be Ordinary but Extraordinary Integration and will no longer only involve the 1,273 workers scheduled for the second extension but will increase to 3,500 employees including the initial 1,273.

ArcelorMittal did not specify either the starting date of the Cigs or the duration. The company request came just at the moment in which we try to carry on the negotiation between the government, Ilva in extraordinary administration and ArcelorMittal on the new industrial plan.

The Ministry of Labor and Social Policies is studying a three-year 100% contribution exemption for those wishing to hire workers in Extraordinary Administration and Cassa Integrazione, as announced by Minister Nunzia Catalfo.

Meanwhile, after the AncelorMittal communication, the Fim-Cisl , Fiom-Cgil and Uilm-Uil trade unions "rejected" AncelorMittal's warning of Cigs. "From tomorrow, at the ministerial meeting - the trade unions affirm in a note - we will strongly ask to clarify a lay-off procedure that, in fact, would replace the current Cigo due to the economic crisis with Cigs making it become a structural problem ". "The time has come - they add - from the government and Ilva in As, currently the sole owners of the steel plant, to clarify the environmental, employment and industrial future of a site of strategic interest for the country".
