Vladimir Putin pointed out ongoing attempts to distort the historical truth of World War II in Europe.

According to him, in this activity, “some quite respectable international institutions and European structures” joined the heirs of Nazi accomplices.

Speaking at a meeting of the Victory organizing committee, the Russian president recalled the recent resolution of the European Parliament "On the importance of preserving historical memory for the future of Europe." The Russian leader drew attention to the fact that this document actually equalized Nazi Germany and the USSR.

“The recent resolution of the European Parliament put virtually both the Nazi aggressors and the Soviet Union on the same level. They almost blame the USSR, along with Nazi Germany, for unleashing the Second World War, ”he said.

According to him, the authors of the document “seemed to have forgotten who attacked Poland on September 1, 1939 and the Soviet Union on June 22, 1941.” As the head of state noted, those who are trying to argue with such an assessment are accused of "an information war against a democratic Europe."

In this regard, he urged to continue to publish archival materials, to talk about the victories and defeats of the Red Army, the tragedies of prisoners, the Holocaust, the crimes of nationalists.

“Our answer to the lie is the truth,” Putin emphasized. The Russian leader noted that there are no and cannot be “disadvantageous” or “inconvenient” pages in history.

“They want to suggest that Russia is a source of evil and misfortune”

Recall that in September the European Parliament adopted a resolution in which the Soviet-German non-aggression pact of 1939 was declared the cause of the Second World War. According to media reports, it was prepared at the initiative of Lithuania with the support of Polish deputies.

The document claimed that World War II "was a direct result of the notorious Nazi-Soviet non-aggression pact of August 23, 1939, also known as the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact."

The authors of the resolution expressed the opinion that "two totalitarian regimes, set out to conquer the world, divided Europe into two zones of influence."

Soon after the publication, the document was commented on by the Russian Foreign Ministry. The official representative of the department, Maria Zakharova, pointed out that the resolution of the European deputies has nothing to do with history.

Note that ten years ago, the European Parliament made a similar document in content, in which, in particular, it was proposed that August 23, the date of signing the Soviet-German treaty, be considered "a pan-European day in memory of the victims of all totalitarian and authoritarian regimes." However, there were no direct accusations against Russia regarding the interpretation of history in the resolution.

According to Oleg Morozov, a member of the Federation Council committee on international affairs, the appearance of such documents should be considered an element of modern information warfare.

“Another attempt to accuse Russia of being almost the reason for the outbreak of World War II is to continue the Russophobic line that the collective West is trying to make an ideological basis for its political strategy,” said the senator in an interview with RT.

According to him, the “collective West” needs to justify the military budget, the rejection of international agreements, various sanctions and other measures.

“They want to impress the young Europeans that in 1939 everything was completely wrong, that Russia was a source of evil and misfortune. This is a kind of ideological pillow that will gently fall on if something happens, ”said Morozov.

The head of the Civil Society Development Fund, Konstantin Kostin, agreed that we are talking about ideological confrontation and belittling the role of the Soviet people in the victory over Nazi Germany.

“In Russia, this is one of the most serious events that underlies the worldview of citizens. So, for some countries, such a rewriting of history is an attempt to somehow bring a slightly different ideological base to your policy and aggressive rhetoric regarding Russia, ”the expert said in an interview with RT.

In his opinion, such actions against Russia represent an attempt to belittle the place occupied by the Great Patriotic War and the feat of peoples.

“For some, it’s also an attempt in this way to retroactively justify the behavior of the rulers of their countries at that time, to make it more noble. For some, this is due to the need to justify their political priorities. These attempts will be all the time, ”the expert summed up.
