“We have confirmed our proposal that this agreement be extended, and we consider it important to decide on such an extension the sooner, the better, by the end of this year, as Russian President Vladimir Putin recently proposed,” Lavrov told a press conference in Washington.

According to him, special attention at the meeting was paid to "strategic stability, the state of affairs in the field of arms control and non-proliferation."

He noted that Moscow offered Washington any options for extending the contract.

Earlier, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said that the format of the agreement on the reduction and limitation of strategic offensive arms (START III) needs to be expanded to take into account modern challenges and the development of armaments and to involve China in it.
