Karin Brynell, CEO of the Swedish grocery trade, believes that initiatives like the store in Örebro introduced on tests, where food waste bags are now available as alternatives, will become increasingly common. To reduce consumption of plastic carriers, a tax is expected to be introduced in 2020.

- We know that a larger chain of stores said that they should switch to paper bags instead of plastic on the fruit and vegetable department. More initiatives will surely come as the tax gets closer.

Must be renewable material

At the same time, the industry organization is working on making all plastic packaging recyclable by 2022. By 2030 there is another goal that they should be made of recycled plastic or renewable material.

- The issue is topical, and there is also a great deal of interest in the issue from the consumer's point of view, says Karin Brynell.

- We notice that it is a consumer pressure to act on the plastic. We should remember that plastic is at the same time a good material for protecting food. We love being able to use plastic for food products as a protection and extension of durability. At the same time it is important that it is recyclable.
