At least one person was killed and several others wounded on Monday, December 9 in New Zealand after the eruption of the White Island volcano erupted. Ashes were projected several thousand meters high and a thick cloud of smoke spread, visible from the mainland.

This is probably because the White Island volcano is the most active in New Zealand that attracts so many visitors. The authorities report that about 50 people were on the island at the time of the eruption. As for the relief, they report 20 wounded, many in critical condition. The victims suffer severe burns. Several people on the volcano at the time of the eruption are also still missing.

Around 14h, ash has sprung up to 4000 m altitude. Images of the surveillance camera located on the volcano show even the presence of walkers inside the crater a few moments before the eruption.

Warning signs spotted in recent days

The White Island volcano is first an uninhabited island, located 50 km from the Bay of Plenty, in the north of the country. The last time an eruption occurred in New Zealand dates back to 2016, on this same island of White Island. But she was much less intense and had no victim.

A few days ago, scientists at the GNS, the Geological Survey Institute of New Zealand, had observed disturbing signs of the White Island volcano, possibly indicating the possibility of an eruption.
