December 08, 2019 North Korea announced that it had conducted "a very important test" at its Sohae site, officially a center for the launch of satellites, on the northeastern coast of the country, a launch area for long-range carriers. This was announced by a spokesman for the National Academy of Defense Sciences, without specifying what kind of test it was but underlining that it will have "an important effect" that will "change the strategic position" of North Korea.

Satellite images taken last December 5 in Sohae and disseminated by the American Institute of International Studies Middlesbury show a large container that according to analyst Jeffrey Lewis is "a decent indicator of the imminent test of a missile engine".

North Korea is intensifying its pressure on the United States to unblock nuclear talks. The ambassador of North Korea, Kim Song, said that the denuclearization "has already left the negotiating table", that "long and difficult talks with the US are not needed" and that concessions are expected by the end of the year in nuclear diplomacy "by Washington. The Trump administration's accusation is in fact that of pursuing a "hostile policy" towards North Korea, while the European Union "has been playing the role of pet of the United States" for several months.

During the night some agencies reported that the "very important test" was a long-range missile and that it would have "an important impact on changing the strategic position of North Korea in the near future". But the North Korean news agency, KCNA, in giving the news of the test has hinted, without explicitly specifying it, that it is the launch of a missile.
