08 December 201910.55 Piero Terracina died in Rome, one of the last survivors of the Auschwitz death camp, where he was deported because he was Jewish. He was 91 years old. Having escaped the round-up of 16 October 1943, he was arrested in 1944 and deported. The eight members of his family were the only ones to return home. Starting in the 1980s, he carried out witnessing activities in schools, associations, universities and prisons. The Jewish Community of Rome "mourns the disappearance of a bastion of Memory" said President Ruth Dureghello.
