2018 - Former CDU General Secretary Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer is elected as the new party leader in Hamburg. In a ballot she defeated the former Union faction leader Friedrich Merz.

2017 - Polish Prime Minister Beata Szydlo resigns. Her successor will be Mateusz Morawiecki. Both are confidants of the right-wing PiS party leader Jaroslaw Kaczynski.

2004 - Three years after the overthrow of the radical Islamic Taliban, the current transitional president, Hamid Karzai, is sworn in as the first freely elected president of Afghanistan.

1999 - According to a ruling of the Federal Administrative Court, the observation of political parties by secret service is generally permitted.

1994 - The Federal Constitutional Court declares the so-called "coal pfennig", an 8.5% surcharge on the electricity price, for constitutional violations.
