It is an unbelievable denouement. The four suspects were all shot dead by the police during a re-enactment of the crime that took place on Thursday night.

The men were accused of raping and murdering a 27-year veterinarian last week. A whole section of the population immediately applauded the police action. Hundreds of people gathered at the scene of the reenactment, detonating firecrackers and throwing flower petals at the police. " I am happy that the four defendants were killed, " said the victim's sister. Already last Saturday, a member of parliament called for the " lynching in public of the guilty ".

Police in Hyderabad claim to have shot the suspects as they managed to seize police weapons and tried to flee.

Attempt to escape?

But many Indians have also expressed anger at the turn of events. Supreme Court lawyer Karuna Nundy tweeted, " Now no one will ever know if the four men killed by the police were innocent ..."

In India, the police are frequently accused of extrajudicial crimes: to cover cases and even to calm the public opinion. Did she want to do justice herself in this affair? The question is on everyone's lips.
