Fifty-eight migrants at least died in the sinking of their boat off Mauritania. They had left Gambia with about 150 people on board before their boat sank in the evening.

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) said 83 passengers had managed to swim to the coast. " The Mauritanian authorities are cooperating effectively with the agencies present in Nouadhibou, " said Laura Lungarotti, IOM's chief of mission in Mauritania. " Our priority is to take care of the survivors and provide them with the necessary help ," she said. The wounded were transported to the Nouadhibou hospital.
