A shooting has been recorded on Wednesday at the base of Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, as reported by a spokesman for the naval base. Meanwhile, several media report several injured, two of them in critical condition, and that the attacker has taken his own life.

"Security forces responded to the report of a shooting at the Pearl Harbor naval base. The incident occurred at approximately 2:30 pm [0:30 GMT]," the spokesman said in a statement.

The accesses to the base were closed, but they reopened approximately an hour and a half later. The local press reports that the situation is contained and that the victims are mostly civilians. Also that the shooter took the life of a bullet.

The Hawaii News Now site showed images of ambulances and armored vehicles mobilized inside the facility.

He also reported that the shooting was reported in Dry Dock No. 2 , near the south entrance of the base, and quoted a witness, who did not want to be identified, who after hearing the shots saw "three people on the ground ".

He added that he then saw the shooter, who was wearing what appeared to be a sailor uniform, shoot himself in the head.

The base houses both the Air Force and the Navy, which has its Pacific Fleet there.

Wednesday's shooting took place three days before the 78th anniversary of the Japanese surprise attack on Pearl Harbor, which left 2,403 US soldiers dead in 1941 and caused the United States to enter World War II.

Two schools within the base were closed, as was another nearby.

Honolulu police told the Star Advertiser newspaper that military authorities were in charge of the situation. Firefighters sent six units with 22 officials.
