Women from Borgholm accounted for the majority of overnight stays at Kalmar women's sheltered housing last year, a total of 308 nights. For this, the municipality has paid a special daily rate.

But besides the fact that the municipality is at the top when it comes to emergency investments, Borgholm is the contract municipality that pays the least operating contribution to the women's shelter.

- The Borgholm Social Committee is currently in a phase of savings and has had great savings requirements. This means that every stone has to be lifted, says Lars Ljung (S), newly-appointed chairman of the social committee in Borgholm.

Pay for investments in sheltered accommodation

- Then it is a voluntary activity so it is not a given that the municipalities should make any contribution at all. It is a political choice that the Board has made backwards in time to settle on that level. That is a political priority.

But you were one of the municipalities whose municipal residents used the services of women's shelters the most - isn't it reasonable to pay more then?

- We pay if they seek help and get shelter. So it's not like we're not doing anything.

Insert other measures for victims of violence

Another reason for choosing to be at a low level is that the municipality has other measures for women who are vulnerable, says Lars Ljung. For example, places on HVB homes and rental apartments in other municipalities.

- It is important to be clear that there are other measures the municipality can take. The women's shelter stands for a measure. So it's not that the issue itself is a low priority, says Lars Ljung (S).

But SEK 2000 in operating grants, do you think that is enough?

- Obviously that is not enough, I understand that too. I can't say anything other than that we can discuss our level in the board. A new application has come in so we have it in front of us, so we have to think about whether it is a reasonable level or not.
