• Impeachment: Donald Trump accused of creating a parallel diplomacy to be re-elected
  • Editorial..The Ukrainegate case puts the president of the United States on the ropes

The 'impeachment' against President Donald Trump continues to advance in the House of Representatives. Today the declarations of constitutionalists before the Justice Committee have begun, in what constitutes, in fact, the prelude to the formalization of the charges against the president for his alleged pressures to his counterpart in Ukraine to help him in the 2020 elections .

If the process takes its course, it is possible that next week that Committee formalizes what is known as "impeachment articles" so that they are voted in plenary at the end of the month.

Outside, the 'impeachment' seems unstoppable . In a closed-door meeting in which lawmakers could not even carry their mobile phones, the president of the House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, asked her co-religionists: "Are you ready?"

Inside, the thing is different. Twelve Democratic congressmen have proposed replacing the 'impeachment' with a 'censorship' , which is a procedure that has never been carried out and has much less political and institutional weight. And, according to the website 'Politico', the response of the representatives to Pelosi's call was a resounding "yes" ... always, of course, to move forward cautiously.

The reason is explained by the numbers of a survey of the CNN television network released last week: 50% of Americans support the 'impeachment' that, theoretically, could lead to the dismissal of the head of state and government. And 43% oppose. They are exactly the same figures from a month ago. That means that the public hearings of the 'Ukrainegate' have not moved public opinion in the least. If anything, they have reinforced Trump's base. Internal polls of the Democratic Party reveal that his unexpected triumphs in the elections to governor in the states of Kentucky and Louisiana would have been more comfortable if there had been no 'impeachment'.

The reason is that the Republican Party is fully identified with Trump and claims that everything is a false scandal intended to serve as an excuse for a legal coup. The 'Ukrainegate', thus, would be the 'plan B' after the failure of the Democratic opposition with the 'Russiagate' . As the head of that party in the Justice Committee, Doug Collins, said today, the whole scandal is nothing more than the consequence "of hatred of a man who came to the White House and did what he said he was going to do ." Behind Collins, a series of posters carried out professedly by Republicans with legends such as 'The' impeachment 'of a president is to undo a national election' giving the session a more 'mitinero' air than investigating the head of state and the Government.

For jurists and passionate about politics, the session has been a great televised show . For public opinion, it probably has not had the slightest relevance. Three of the attendees, elected by the Democrats, defended the impeachment. The fourth, Jonathan Turley, who had been called by the Republican minority, attacked him. His argument was not legal, but rather political: the investigation is going too fast and does not have the support of public opinion. In a sense, it is a recognition of the facts. The 'impeachment' is a political process. And, in the era of internet and social networks, of public opinion.

And public opinion has already given its verdict in relation to Trump. If one takes into account that, according to the website specialized in FiveThirtyEight statistics, the president's popularity is 41.7% , the conclusion is evident: the 'Ukrainegate' has not changed in the least a country split between those who are determined to embreirr and feathered Trump regardless of what he does or does not do, and who believe that the president is, in the words of Dick Perry, his former Secretary of Energy (who has had to resign precisely because of his participation in this scandal ), "the chosen one".
