On Wednesday, Ryanair announced that the airline will close its base at Skavsta Airport at the end of March next year. But the message came as a shock to the Transport Workers' Union.

- We received the information today via media. It is very sad that the information has reached our members in this field, says Johan Einarsson, Ombudsman for Transport, who says that Ryanair has called for an MBL meeting next week.

"Should negotiate before deciding"

Not having negotiated to make redundancies with the represented unions before the decision was made is a violation of Swedish law, says Birgitta Nyström, professor of civil law at Lund University.

- It is not about informing afterwards, or in connection with the decision, one should negotiate before the decision to make reductions, she says.

Can get high fines

Although the possible violation of the law will not change Ryanair's decision, the company can be fined.

- It's not that the employer makes decisions invalid, because it lies within the decision-making authority, but it is considered a serious labor law error where you have to pay damages at a high level, says Birgitta Nyström.

Johan Einarsson says that the Transport Workers' Federation will want to "deal with" the issue of a law violation, but cannot say how it will happen.
