Berlin (AP) - The designated new SPD chairmen today discuss with leading party politicians the future course in view of the grand coalition.
In addition the extended presidium in Berlin (11.00 o'clock) comes together. The more than 40-strong body has already met twice to discuss the mid-term review of the grand coalition and new projects. The designated SPD chairmen Saskia Esken and Norbert Walter-Borjans are taking part for the first time.
The extended presidium, in which the SPD federal ministers, the parliamentary group leaders and prime ministers are represented, wants to work out a proposal for the party executive committee and the party convention starting on Friday. The party establishment fully supports the continuation of the coalition with the Union. The designated new top duo had repeatedly expressed GroKo-critical, but recently avoided a threat of a coalition break.
Among other things, Esken and Walter Borjans want to make high billions of investments of the state in schools and roads and more climate protection on conditions for a continuation of the government alliance. The two had won the membership decision on the SPD presidency against Federal Finance Minister Olaf Scholz and Klara Geywitz.
The party did not plan to inform the public after the meeting of the SPD committee.
