During the disturbances in the Duindorp district of The Hague on Sunday evening, the police arrested thirteen people, a police spokesman confirmed to NU.nl on Monday.
A group of people had barricaded the road on Sunday evening, started fires and destroyed vehicles. Because of the danger for the emergency services, it was decided to use the ME instead of the fire brigade to extinguish the fires.
The suspects have been arrested for committing open violence, destruction and wantonness. "In the meantime, they have also been sent back. They will soon be able to answer for their actions," says a police spokesperson.
The police cannot yet confirm why the neighborhood has been uneasy for several days. The unrest might have arisen after last week's announcement that there will probably be no bonfires this year. "We are alert," said the spokesperson.
The organization behind the bonfire in Duindorp decided to pull the plug on Friday after a spark of rain last year. Earlier the municipality announced that there will probably be no bonfires during the coming New Year. According to the municipality of The Hague, a professional organization is lacking.
