02 December 2019The 36th edition of the European Championships in swimming, swimming, diving, diving from great heights and synchronized swimming will take place in Rome from 11 to 21 August 2022. This was announced by the Ligue Europeenne de Natation on an official note. Both the official presentation of the dossier at the Dublin bureau on 12 October and the "site visit" carried out in Rome on 22 November were decisive. Two appointments in which the delegation, composed of the general secretary, David Sparkes, the vice president, Andrii Vlaskov, and the executive director, Gianni Minervini, was able to ascertain the solidity of the candidacy and the support guaranteed by the mayor, Virginia Raggi, by the representatives of the Minister of Sport, Vincenzo Spadafora, of the president of the Lazio Region, Nicola Zingaretti and of the president and managing director of Sport and Health, Rocco Sabelli, with whom he is also scheduled, in the coming days, an in-depth meeting with the president of Federnuoto and LEN, Paolo Barelli.

The enthusiasm of the Italian movement
"We are enthusiastic, satisfied and ready to take on this new challenge - says Paolo Barelli, as Fin - I would like to thank the Government, the Municipality, the Region and Sport and Health, without which it would have been impossible to present a sustainable candidacy; the press that supported us along the I walk and the societies that are the creators of the growth of our practitioners and of our international successes and, therefore, of our credibility. The goal is to organize an event that remains in the memory of people and enthusiasts, enrich the city of Rome, the regional territory and Italy from the sporting point of view and, consequently, cultural, economic and infrastructural ". "As president of Len - continues Barelli - instead I would like to thank the administrations involved for the candidature that covers all the points required by the bureau and will allow the European league and the continental movement to play the championship at a historic and prestigious sports venue and extremely tourist like Rome ".

The reasons for the choice
The decision of Len rewards a nomination born in the spring of 2018 with multiple objectives: to bring an international event of aquatic disciplines back to Italy after 13 years; further promote swimming specialties involving the best European athletes, protagonists at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro and at the recent World Championships in Gwangju; feeding the culture of water and preventing accidents by submersion and drowning through the diffusion of the instruments to live responsibly the sea that washes the 8000 kilometers of coasts of our country and the bodies of water and rivers; use the plant inheritance left by the 2009 world championship which, together with the approximately 1500 affiliated companies, represent the engines for increasing basic activity and training athletes of excellence.

The event numbers
The participation of 1500 athletes representing 52 nations for 74 finals with 222 medals up for grabs is expected. The media presence is estimated in more than 800 sector operators with an accumulated amount of 100 thousand spectators in the stands and 200 million viewers. Involved all the regional territory. The Foro Italico Park will host the district market that will develop between the Swimming Stadium where the swimming and diving competitions will take place and the Tennis Center, where the removable synchronized swimming pool will be set up.

Involved all the regional territory
The Federal Center-Polo Natatorio di Ostia will be the headquarters for the open water swimming competitions, while the dives from great heights (for the first time included in the program of the Europeans) could be held in the area of Castel Sant'Angelo, under examination of the competent authorities together with other crucial, historical and spectacular points of the city. Multiple facilities will be involved in the area for the preparation phase; among these is the federal center of Pietralata - formerly the seat of federal activities and collegiate members of the synchronized swimming national teams -, the Valco San Paolo swimming pool in the process of restoration and the facilities dedicated to diving in the Acquacetosa.

There will be no concrete casting
No new plant will be built, but facilities in the metropolitan city and the region will be exploited and used. As part of the promotional activities, sports, educational and social events will be organized that will involve citizens and especially primary and secondary school students, associations, voluntary work and sports clubs in order to create a web of relationships and connections with the regional fabric, mainly of the tertiary sector, to increase the social conscience, through the diffusion of the sporting practice and in particular of the aquatic disciplines, and opportunities linked to the tourist and artistic segments.

Last time in 1983
The event could be integrated into the European Championships - coordinated by the European Broadcasting Union, which is also a partner of LEN - as happened in 2018 when the multidisciplinary event took place in Berlin and Glasgow, where the swimming, diving, synchronized swimming and swimming competitions were held cross-country skiing (Loch Lomond). The European championships, therefore, will return to Italy after the 1983 edition, which followed Bologna 1927 and Turin 1954. It will be the fifth time of a historic event of the aquatic disciplines in Rome after the 1960 Olympics and the 1994 and 2009 world championships.
