Students at the American University in Cairo withdrew from a conference of former US diplomats, shouting slogans against the Israeli occupation and raising banners in support of the Palestinian cause.

The page of the American University Students Union in Cairo published a video of the students' chanting against Zionism in the presence of former US ambassadors to Cairo Daniel Curtiers and Frank Weissen.

The page said 150 students had withdrawn from what it called a debate supported by the Israeli occupation.

Mr Carters served as US ambassador to Cairo under former President Bill Clinton, while serving as Washington's ambassador to Tel Aviv under George W. Bush. He is currently teaching Middle East politics at Princeton University.

Wissen heads the Arab Gulf Institute, known for his relationship with Egyptian officials, and was sent by former President Barack Obama to negotiate with Egyptian officials during the January 2011 revolution.

The student association is collecting donations for Gaza at the American University in Cairo this week, in cooperation with the Students' Union.

The student association organized solidarity rallies with the Palestinian people last November during the Israeli aggression on the Gaza Strip inside the university headquarters with the participation of hundreds of students, and posted pictures of events on social networking sites.

The visit of US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo last January to the American University in Cairo has provoked angry reactions within the university community, where the University Council demanded a no confidence in the President of the University Francis Richardoni, who was also ambassador to Washington in Cairo, because he allowed the US Secretary of State to take the university A platform to address the Arab world.

The University Council of Academics urged the Council of Guardians in New York to withhold confidence from Richardoni, as the university celebrated its centenary.
