December 02, 2019The Teramo Police operation is called "The Travelers" which has dismantled a large criminal organization composed of Nigerian citizens.

They are accused in various ways of criminal association aimed at committing the illicit financial intermediation, self-recycling and transnational recycling, as well as trafficking in human beings.

Police investigations of the Flying Squad with the collaboration of the "Abruzzo" crime prevention department of Pescara and the mobile teams of Ascoli Piceno, Fermo and Macerata, coordinated by the L'Aquila District Anti-Mafia Directorate, ascertained "the existence of an association to commit crimes, with operational bases in the provinces of Teramo, Ascoli Piceno, Fermo and Macerata, composed entirely of Nigerian citizens dedicated to recycling and self-recycling to Nigeria, through air travel, of large sums of money, cleverly concealed from internal baggage allowance ".

The river of money came mainly from human trafficking and the sexual exploitation of young Nigerians and from further illegal activities. The investigation revealed the existence of "a widespread system spread throughout the national territory that constitutes a structured and transnational mechanism for collecting savings or recycling and self-recycling through the Hawala mechanism: trustees on the word, one in Italy the other in Nigeria, through which they travel, in black briefcases, sums that are around 100 thousand euros. 30%, then, was shared among the trustees.
