In Senegal, victims of the regime of Hissène Habré will be in front of the press on December 3 to make their voices heard after recent statements of the wife of the former Chadian president.

According to Fatime Raymonne Habre, the former Chadian head of state, sentenced in May 2016 to life imprisonment in Dakar, would be ill, and his state of health would be incompatible with his detention.

But for its part, the Association of Victims of Crime Hissène Habré denounces a manipulation to obtain a pardon. The president of the association, the Chadian Clement Abaïfouta , made the trip to Dakar to make an adjustment .

International Detainee

His phone keeps ringing, he says. Calls from Chadian victims of the Hissène Habré regime, worried about the campaign for his release. Clement Abaïfouta traveled from N'djamena to " tell the truth. It is a historical trial. It should be a little more serious vis-à-vis the trial that has done good to Africa .

If Hissène Habré is really sick, then he must be treated, according to Clement Abaïfouta. But he must serve his sentence. " Habré is in his cell," says the president of the regime's Victims Association. It has a TV, a breakfast. We did not even have a piece of mat. The victims are suffering in Ndjamena and are demanding reparations that are slow in coming. We do not talk about it. Madame Habré talks about her husband, but we also talk about the victims ".

In total, 82 billion CFA francs in compensation (nearly 125 million euros) were not paid. A possible grace of Hissène Habré would be for the victims an additional injustice. " Habré was not convicted by Senegalese justice," said Clement Abaïfouta . He was sentenced by the international procedure. Senegal alone can not afford to give a favor to Habré . The president of the Association des victimes hopes to make this position heard by the Senegalese authorities in the coming days.
