Omani Foreign Minister Yusuf bin Alawi held talks with his Iranian counterpart Mohammad Javad Zarif in the Iranian capital Tehran on a number of regional issues, most notably Iran's initiative for peace in the Gulf region, and Omani Minister of National Security Council Ali Shamkhani.

Bin Alawi's visit comes as part of consultations on the latest regional developments, and the announcement of Muscat's view on the Hormuz peace initiative Iran put forward last September to strengthen security in the Gulf region and the Strait of Hormuz.

"The tension in the Gulf waters is not in the interest of any of its countries, and we must work to reduce the tension in them," bin Alawi said, adding that achieving security in the region "requires an agreement between their countries and overcoming their differences." He added that his country is ready to harness its potential to reduce tension in the region and create a platform for dialogue between its countries.

The official IRNA news agency said bin Alawi's visit was the third in the last nine months.

Meet Shamkhani
"Regional alliances can ensure security in the region without interference from foreign powers," the secretary of Iran's National Security Council said, referring to the establishment of a Bahrain-based naval alliance to protect shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, which drew criticism from the Iranian side. .

"Desperate attempts led by the United States to form an international coalition in the Strait of Hormuz are doomed to failure," Shamkhani was quoted as saying.

Tensions in the region have intensified in recent months after Washington tightened sanctions on Iran in May, and subsequent attacks on oil tankers and other attacks on oil facilities deep in Saudi Arabia. Iran has denied direct or indirect responsibility for it and has offered to sign a non-aggression pact with the Gulf states. .

Messages to leaders
The Iranian Foreign Ministry recently announced that the full text of the Hormuz Peace Initiative proposal would be sent to GCC and Iraqi leaders.

Speaking at the UN General Assembly, President Hassan Rouhani said the goal is "to promote peace, progress and prosperity for all peoples benefiting from the Strait of Hormuz, to establish friendly relations and to launch collective action to secure energy supplies and freedom of navigation."
