In October, the Nils Holgersson Group presented the annual water tax report which compares prices for water, waste collection, sewage and heating in Sweden's municipalities.

Varberg stood out as the municipality with the largest price increase for water by 15 percent compared to the previous year. And next year there will be a further increase in the tariff in both Varberg and Falkenberg, says VIVAB.

In Varberg, the VA fee is increased by 11 percent and in Falkenberg by 10 percent.

Drought and low groundwater levels require efforts

The reason is that the population in the municipalities is increasing and higher demands are placed on water treatment plants.

"Our region is facing major challenges with growing population, climate change and stricter legislation in the water and wastewater area," said Johan Jacobsson, CFO at VIVAB, in a press release.

The money that comes in through the increased tariff will go to a number of measures such as a new water tower in Varberg and maintenance of the 300-mile-long pipeline network.
