1. Snow on the registration plate

A registration plate must be readable. It is therefore important to remove any snow, ice or dirt from the sign before driving. Otherwise you can get SEK 1,500 in fines.

- When leaving home, one should make sure that the signs are actually visible. Then they can of course be covered over a small neighbor if you drive when it snows, of course you can't stop and brush all the time, says Anders Schääf, who is the group manager at the traffic police in Gothenburg.

2. Poorly scratched squares

It is important to have a good view when driving a car, as not to scrape the boxes free of ice can increase the risk of accidents. There are requirements to scrape the front window and the front side windows, according to Anders Schääf.

- Sometimes when we come to an accident we see people who have scraped a small circle in the front window. Then you can be suspected of carelessness in traffic. Those who are sentenced can pay daily fines.

3. Snow on the car roof

Remember to sweep the car roof off snow that might otherwise blow off and obscure your or other road users' view. Anyone who does not can risk daily fines and get rid of the driver's license.

- If it flies by big shocks, it can hit a road user behind you so it loses its field of view. Should there be an accident there could be carelessness in traffic.

4. No winter tires

Between December 1 and March 31, it is lawful to have winter tires if there is winter road law. If you do not, you can be convicted of carelessness in traffic if you are involved in an accident.

- Winter road teams prevail when there is snow, ice, snowmelt or frost on any part of the road. In the event of an accident, it is we police on the spot who decide whether it is winter road law or not, says Anders Schääf.

5. Snow-covered car headlights

In addition to boxes and registration plates, it is also important to keep the lamps free of snow, ice and dirt.

- There are set fines starting at SEK 1,600 depending on the lamp.

6. Over-speeded speed sign

If a speeding sign is snowed and you are stopped by a police officer for speeding, the legal situation is a bit unclear.

- In some cases when it has gone to court, the motorist has been released and in other cases the driver has been dropped. One idea is to not run faster than the base speed 70 kilometers per hour outside of urban areas, says Anders Schääf.

If you are fined, it can be from SEK 1,500 to SEK 4,000.

7. Idle driving

When it is winter cold, many can be tempted by having the car idle to keep warm. But there are often local rules for how long idling is allowed, sometimes it is one minute and sometimes three minutes. There are several cases when too long idle driving has resulted in a fine of SEK 1,000.
