November 30, 2019The number of victims of the Tuesday earthquake in Albania has risen to 50, while the search for any survivors or bodies without life in the rubble has ended: Prime Minister Edi Rama has announced, adding that the injured are about 2,000, of which 41 still in the hospital. The premier also indicated that, according to preliminary data, around 900 buildings in Durres and over 1,465 in the capital Tirana suffered serious damage.

Now Albania must concentrate on reconstruction, while the emergency of the thousands of displaced persons remains to be managed, many of whom are still housed in school gyms, despite the availability of several hotels on the coast to host them.

The 6.4 magnitude earthquake that shook Durazzo and Thumane at four o'clock in the morning on November 28 last injured about 1,200 buildings, while another 265 have yet to be examined by experts, Prime Minister Rama explained. His government, he added, is preparing draconian laws with penalties of up to 15 years of imprisonment for those who will build without complying with the anti-seismic safety criteria.

Meanwhile, the US embassy in Tirana has announced the arrival of a team of experts from Virginia and California, which will help the Albanians to verify the stability of the damaged buildings.
