Marta Bassino of Italy on Saturday set the fastest time in the first round of the giant slalom in Killington, Vermont, for the Alpine Skiing World Cup, ahead of Slovakia's Petra Vlhova and Swiss Michelle Gisin.

In 49 sec 05, on a very short course due to a strong wind at the top of the Vermont track, Bassino beat Vlhova by 23 / 100th and Gisin by 29 / 100th.

France's Tessa Worley (+0.35), American Mikaela Shiffrin (+0.41) and Germany's Viktoria Rebensburg (+0.45) are in ambush within half a second of the Transalpine.

The two other French women engaged in Killington giant, Coralie Frasse-Sombet and Clara Direz, respectively achieved the 11th and 17th time (+0.98 and +1.55), and will play the second round.

The young New Zealander Alice Robinson (17), winner of the opening giant slalom of the season in Sölden at the end of October, was uncertain due to a knee injury. She finally darted, but came out on the middle of the first run.

No less than eleven skiers have completed in the same second a first round shortened, leaving the entire suspense before the second round, scheduled at 13:00 local (19:00 French).
