Four days after the earthquake that struck Albania, Prime Minister Edi Rama announced this Saturday, November 30, the end of rescue operations. The disaster left 51 dead, according to a final assessment.

It is with emotion that the Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama read the names of the victims of the earthquake at a meeting of the government. The new balance sheet is heavy: 51 people died, 900 people were treated and 41 are still hospitalized.

Edi Rama also announced the end of the rescue operations. Since the earthquake on Tuesday at dawn, teams of Albanian and European rescue workers have worked to get people out of the rubble. About fifty people were saved. The Prime Minister expressed his " deep gratitude " to these teams. Yesterday, France thanked him by tweeting " forever grateful ", accompanied by a photo showing him alongside French rescuers.

This earthquake, with a magnitude of 6.4, violently struck the cities of Durres and Thumane in the west of the country. In Tirana, the capital, no deaths were reported, but about 70 buildings and 250 houses were damaged. Albania is known for its wild urbanism and its houses built without permits and without respect for standards. At present, 5,000 people remain homeless. Edi Rama promised them a new home by the end of the year.
